Welcome to The Write Life.
Ten years ago, I never in my wildest dreams thought I I’d be a writer.
But, believe it or not, the traditional career path never clicked for me. I graduated university with a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Law. And then pursued a graduate program in software entrepreneurship.
So how the hell did I end up as a writer?
Well, I've always wanted to forge my own path. Formal education laid the foundation. When I discovered the power of the Internet, everything changed.
I started publishing online in 2009. It was a side hustle back then, whilst pursuing my graduate program. I've never looked back.
The opportunities to make writing work for you are abundant now. I've always thought writing online is the most scalable professional networking opportunity.
It's insane how much you can achieve if you have the right tools, the mindset and make time to pursue your life's work. When you publish your ideas online, doors open to meaningful work and you have the opportunity to live life on your terms.
Think about this scenario for a minute: You publish a post outlining suggestions, opinions and thoughts on a topic you deeply care about and it’s picked up by the online community. People share it on social media, it gets mentioned in other articles online, and maybe even some curated newsletters.
This kind of exposure could build your network, your audience, and attract the right of people to you. Writing opens so many doors and even if it’s not your career choice, it can lead to discovering a new career path.
If you are serious about it, you can make it a thriving career.
Since I started writing online, my work has been featured on Forbes, Entrepreneur, Business Insider, CNBC, Inc. Magazine, Pocket Hits, Thought Catalog and more.
I worked with Microsoft as a paid small business content writer for two years.
I’ve been invited to speak at events.
And I have also written a book, published by a reputable publisher in London.
They found my work online and reached out.
I didn’t have to pitch an agency.
Another agency has reached out about a proposal. I may be working on another book soon. I’m yet to decide.
Today, I make a living from multiple income sources, including sponsorships, book sales, courses, the Medium partner program, newsletter sponsorships and sponsored content on my small business site: Alltopstartups.com
Many writers have similar stories.
Sarah Cooper worked at Google until she wrote a Medium story that absolutely blew up (the story has 79K claps today). This story led Cooper to quit her job and launch full-time into a career as a comedian and author.
It’s insanely easy to start writing— but the hard part is finding your voice, figuring out topics that are interesting for other people to read, and building a long-term habit.
That's why I launched The Write Life.
I will aim to share everything I know plus more—what works for other successful online writers. I've made over $500,000 writing online.
You absolutely do not have to be an expert to start writing online.
Writing is an art, and art is subjective.
Novelist William Maughan said there are three rules to good writing.
“Unfortunately no one knows what they are.”
I actually think there’s one: write the kind of stuff you like to read. Writing for yourself is fun, and it shows. Writing for others is work, and it shows.
So I intend to show you what has worked for me, the tools I use and the actionable steps to take your writing to another level. And how other successful writers are making good money online.
Here’s what I will be sharing twice a week with subscribers:
Everything I know and read about successful online writing.
Practical tools, tried and tested advice, lessons and success stories you need to start writing, keep going and or make it a career option.
Case studies.
Paid subscribers can ask me anything.
At some point on this journey, I will turn the essays into a book you can download for free. I will also add audio version you can listen.
